In attendance: Jeri, Diane, Mary, Barbara, Di, Linda, Louise, Fran, Bobbie, Angie, Maureen Jaine and Iris
our guest was Marge. Meeting held at Bobbies home and the program was the leaf dolls.
Show and tell: Linda showed us her pop up doll from the Marilyn Husted class also the Altoids witch
from Sandy's program last mo. Maureen shared her woven doll and felted bears going to be on her on line class. Fran took a class with Eleanor Peace Bailey and showed us her Tiffany fay doll and witch doll. Mary showed us her pop-up jester doll.
Meeting called to order
Business cards were discussed and Lynn has design and needs money for the cards, tabled until next meeting.
By laws change to eliminate dues was passed by a hand vote by members present.
Nominations for next year: Micki-President, Fran Vice President, Maureen program chair lady, Lynn-newsletter, Bobby-treasurer (until we run out of money) and I can't believe it Iris for Secretary.
Mary sent out categories for quilt doll show, need to pay DQ membership no later than Jan 8. Categories were suggested to DQ. categories last year, need a big show to get more categories.

Bobby received updated rooster , and reported $1458.01 will call Sandy for teacher payout.
Mary volunteered to collect and take dolls to quilt show.
New people will pay for Christmas party dinner.

Maureen arranged class for March 4&5 People signed up to go are Fran, Di., Linda, Micki, Bobbie, Angie, Barbara , Lynn, Dottie, Maryann needle sculpting class about $400 for 2 day class. Should be less than $100 for each person. Mary on waiting list for class.
Maureen reported on Christmas party at Maggiano's on Dec. 17th at 6:00 money coming out of treasury for party will have choice of food tax and gratuity not included. Drinks and wine are extra. Bobby will bring cash and members will pay for their drinks.

Meeting over Diane brought trash to treasure to share Bobbie said if you want to be reimbursed for the treasure you will need to price it and sell it on your own but not at the BC library.
Mary has a friend that is giving away tuxedo parts and fabrics we could decorate them for a fund raiser if we want to.
Bobbie was so patient with teaching us how to make the leaf dolls and had so many of the things we needed right at hand in her home and an fun time was had by all.

Silver Doll-ers September 18 meeting

In attendance Sandy, Linda, Di, Lynn, Mary, Barbara, Angie, Dottie, Micki, Jeri and Iris. Guest Jaine Vaughan and Charlie Johnson (the bead lady).
Sandy has program and brought tins for everyone to paint so we did that before meeting so they were dry. Charlie mentioned a feather boa group and decided they would meet on Oct 6 with E mail to all members. Discussed Business cards for the Silver Doll-ers with Micki and Maryanne to do design of cards; asked if anyone else would like to help. No permanent location on cards as we move around; check blog spot for info of next meeting. Lynn will bring samples and face of mascot if we want to use on cards. Update for doll judges for quilt show needs to be put in program; this will be the main topic for next meeting.
Maryann sent a suggestion of going dark for the summer months and that was discussed and decided that many like it full time. If you can make it, do so and if you can't see you the next month.
Talked about elimination of dues like Art Quilts and E Belles do, and go on a pay as you go as far as classes you would like to take with no pressure to pay or stay for program.
Money was originally collected to pay for mailing of the newsletter which we no longer do.Suggestion to use for our Christmas party and then pay as you go. We will be voting on this next month.
We will need money to have business cards printed up.
By-laws will need to be changed.
Mary told of her computer problems and will be resolved in the next couple of weeks. Jaine and Charlie introduced.
Thank you for those who participated in the Desert quilter's retreat centerpieces.
Charlie talked about her space at Nellis AFB which charges 25% of the sales to show dolls or other things there.
Mary said there were 99 people at the DQ retreat. The donated batting for McDonald house resulted in 30 quilts being donated. You can see pictures of them on the Internet.
Roster was sent around again to be sure there were no corrections.
Jeri volunteered to house Wendy when she comes to teach and it can be either clay or cloth but she is not here May, June or Sept or Oct. Sandy said Wendy was very expensive and maybe we could go to Piece makers to have class. Coming from Canada and could be around $800 to have her come here.
Maureen has Doritt coming March 5 & 6 and Sandy read the by-laws that people would have to sign up and make deposit for the class at that meeting and those not at the meeting would have to send deposit with someone to save them a space. Her class is very reasonable and address any questions to Maureen.
Next meeting at Bobby house; we will be making the leaf baby and she will send out supply lists.
Discussed about Christmas party: what date is best for all; decided to have it on Fri Dec. 17 and then where would it be fun to have it. Micki said she would use her influence to have it at Garfield's or Bellagio cafe if possible.
Names were passed out to those who would like to participate in the doll pin exchange.
Lynn posted newsletter very nicely done. and will send out form for members to fill out.
Elections will be in November.
Mary received a check from DQ and it was decided to divide it up among those who participated in the challenge.
Many wonderful show and tell items: Jeri took knom class from Maureen and finished it to show. Also ornaments that her made with trims from Diane. Dottie showed her doll from Patti Colea patters and told us how she used the tea juice dyes and washed the color out to get the perfect shade. Barbara showed purses she is making. Mary shared the beautiful tassells she made. and beaded doll. Lynn shared the wedding purse she is beading with the watermelon print inside. Di dimensional doll from liquor cup and straws.
Micki wanted to know if we wanted to have a meet and greet at her home and how many would come that far with the class being the next day. It was decided not to have it as it was unclear just when she would be here.

Below are the photos I took (Mary Ashcraft) at our Silver Doll-ers club meeting held at the Boulder City Library this month. As always, any errors or ommissions are just generally tough luck! Just kidding... Contact me and I'll make changes.

As an aside, it was agreed upon this meeting that future doll instructors will be presented on this blog for everyone's consideration one month before we agree to book. Coming soon will be the information from Maurine Adrezin about Wendy Lynn Rinehart, a Canadian teacher who is discussing either a Nip Tuck (fabric) class, or one on polymer clay. as well as information on Christine Shively.

Sandy Leal brought this doll from a previous doll club member, and offered it for Trash to Treassure. Since several of us were interested, names were drawn, and it went home with Jeri Mills.

Lynn Schofield Dahl gave a demo for the group on building a seat for our dolls out of candle sticks, or perhaps a tuna can. Above are the items she brought to share, and a demo doll sitting on her oh-so-fancy seat.

These are some of the future seating projects that were begun during Lynn's workshop! Nice job, Lynn.

We have a show and tell each month that is enjoyed by all.

Micki completed this darling dress from a pattern by Barbara Willis.

Lynn Schofield Dahl let us see her finished chair from the Jean Bernard class. Last blog you saw it with her mermaid seated.

Jeri Mills is back with us from New Hampshire, and showed us how far out of the block she has gone with this orange doll.

Dottie Millington took her chair home from Jean Bernard's class and added more embellishments. Nice job Dottie. Especially for a new dollmaker!

Bobbye Kee brought us her Humpty Dumpty doll she made from a pattern she brought back from EDAC several years ago. The hands are polymer clay over an armature, and the head is also polymer clay.

Bobbye Kee also brought us a wrapped wire chair she made this month.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday last a number of us attended a class given by Jean Bernard at the Boulder City Library. What a class! We learned to work with apoxie sculpt, plaster cloth, wire mesh, delight paper clay, and an amazing number of glass beads, glitters, and other wonderful things. The concept was a chair that had doll parts. However, as you can see from the pieces below, we went far afield from that!

The below correspondence was sent out by Sandy from Jean and is for all the members who will be taking Jean's class this month. Please read carefully, but try to overlook my typos! Mary

Above are the photos from Jean Bernard. We will be making a chair and a pincushion. Jean will supply: press molds and a variety of paints. If you have a particular press mold or paint color in mind, by all means bring them with you. Inks, tins for pin cushion, glitter, micro marbles, nuggets, swarovski crystals, DG3 Art Gel, wires, tubing, glue and a whole lot more!

Here is your list of items to bring with you. Remember! this is your class project. Bring anything you would like to make this your personalized one of a kind art piece. The above pictures are for your inspiration.

NOTE; Please remove all rings, bracelets and watches before class. If you can't remove rings, bring Band-Aids to cover the item(s). I will supply surgical gloves as well.

1 lb. Aves Apoxie Sculpt White. If you have the apoxie bring it with you. If you do not have, you may purchase from me during class.

Optional but helpful: 8" or larger Lazy Susan

Wear Old Clothing - we will get messy

Terry cloth rags or towel (something you can throw away after class)

Package Delight Air Dry Clay - white (You can find it at Michael's)

Small plastic container to hold water

Paintbrushes - various widths from liner to 1". Do not bring your good brushes.

Following are the minutes as submitted by Iris Pucine

The March meeting was held at the Los Prados clubhouse. Thank you, Barbara!

In attendance were Diane, Bobbye, Sandy, Liz, Angie, Louise, Fran, Dottie, Maryanne, Micki, Barbara, Mary, Teri & Iris.

The meeting was called to order by president Diane Zammito.

Discussion was held on where to have next meeting. The Los Prados clubhouse was agreed on for April 17. The program will be turning a candle holder into a doll stand.

October f16 the meeting will be at Bobbye's house doing a leaf doll.

In November the meeting will be at Diane's or Bobbye's house. Iris will present the program.

Angie reported that the power station has a large public meeting room, and she will get back to us with more information for possible meeting sites for us.

Mary, Di and Teri talked about the Desert Quilters Chatter and the pictures that they published.

Desert Quilters has asked our group if we're interested in doing centerpieces for the 10 tables at their September retreat. It was voted that we will do the centerpieces, and Mary was assigned to coordinate this effort. At a future meeting she will bring in a pattern, and then we will all do something different with one pattern.

The treasurer's report from Bobbye was for $1512.59. She has not deposited checks for the classes, so this account is not fully up to date.

The Jean Bernard class for April 23-25 was discussed. The location will be the Boulder City Library. Her project will be making an apoxi sculpt chair and a pin cushion. Balances for Jean's class will be due at the next meeting.

The class for Marilyn Huston will be Sep. 25-26. Marilyn will be staying with Fran, and the class will be held at the Boulder City Library.

For the above teachers, both hostesses will receive $50/day for room and board fees.

The quilt show for DQN will be Mar. 19-21. We have purchased a 10 x 10 booth. Times and shifts were discussed for set-up, working and tear-down. All members wishing to sell in this booth will pay the club $10.00. After some discussion it was decided that the tooth fairy bags will be sold at $5.00. Those who have made more elaborate ones may price their own, and they will be displayed separately. Maryanne volunteered to make the appropriate signs for both.

The size of the mice for the EDAC entries was discussed. It was decided that each person could make the size they wished, but that 7" was maximum height for the favor. Members were asked to bring the completed pieces to our April meeting. Micki handed out the stars for the base and sponges for the moons. Sandy read the information that will be printed on bottom of each entry and it was approved.

Bylaws were read, briefly discussed and approved by the membership. Some revisions will be made, and when completed, will be posted to this blog.

Next month we will have "trash to treasures", so everyone was asked to bring things they'd like to share.

The meeting was called to order by President Diane Zammito at the Boulder City Library. We would like to thank Lynn again for providing us with this location. Attending were Diane, Lynn, Fran, Maryann, Dottie, Barbara, Liz, Teri, Sandy, Mary and Iris.

There was no treasurers' report, and minutes were accepted as read.

The March meeting will be the mermaid- dancing lady challenge to be held at the Los Prados clubhouse. Thank you, Barbara, for providing this location for us. (It has since been decided to postpone this date!)

The DQN show will be March 19- 21. Fran has a list of volunteers who are working to set up, run, and tear down our booth.

Barbara will check Los Prados for our April meeting, for which we will need a program.

The May 15 program is to be determined, and will be held at the Boulder City library.

Mary will be checking for a drop-off place for the Desert Quilters show. (Note from Mary: Members may drop off at any of the quilt shops listed on your entry form list. All entries must be boxed individually, and if you have concerns about their safety, Teri and Mary will be at Quiltique on Mar. 11 to help enter and then store the doll entries).

Lynn requested information for the newsletter about each of our members. Please e-mail some information about yourself, your hobbies, and your experience. She is also looking for doll resources through the library.

Sandy contacted Jean Bernard for teacher rates for class. They would usually charge $250 but would charge us $200 per day. We would have her for 3 days, Apr. 23 - 25. Dates were acceptable with all who would like to attend. It will be held at the Boulder City Library. Discussion was held as to what we would like her to teach as she has many talents, and she does everything mixed media. It was decided we would like something small, old products used in new ways. We talked about the chair class she has taught and that some of our members have already made. This will be an all-day event and information will be forthcoming as to whether a kit fee will be required. Lynn will check on lunch accommodations nearby and let us know what is available.

Discussion was held as to whether Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers is covered by the 501 C3 status. Mary said we don't have that status, but by having half of our members listed as members for DQN, we are covered by their insurance when we meet at a public location like the library.

Tooth fairy bags (now re-named treasure bags) were displayed and discussed. If they're not sold, they will be returned to the maker. Decision regarding price is that we will ask for min. donation of $8.00, and Maryann will make up a sign so stating. Deadline for completion of treasure bags is next meeting where we will put a price tag on them.

Fran showed us the mouse clown with moon and star bases that Micki made for us as samples for EDAC. Micki has 20 star bases and washers for the base of the mice. After discussion on size and characters, it was decided that the mouse can be any fabric or color, and will be decorated as a circus character. All are requested to bring their mice to the March meeting.

Diane asked if we shouldn't have some by-laws for our club. Teri, Diane and Fran have volunteered to draft up same for future discussion.

For show and tell, Fran brought the 5 dolls she entered into IDAC. Liz brought her moon pin on a stand. Very elaborate, Liz! Mary brought painted candlesticks that Teri inspired with her painting instruction.

Mary brought foam core and supplies to instruct the group how to build a shadow box out of an ordinary picture frame, and cover the foam core. It was great fun, and some even finished!

The Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers met January 9, 2010 at the Boulder City library. Minutes were recorded by Iris Puccini:

The treasurer, Bobbye Kee reported that the club currently has $1,315.56 in the treasury.
The location for future meetings was discussed. Lynn said we can use the small room at the library for the Feb. meeting which will be held on Feb. 13. The program will be lining a shadow box and directed by Mary Ashcraft.

The March meeting will be the mermaid (or curvy lady) challenge. Hope everyone's been working hard on that as they should be lots of fun.

Discussion was held about the many wonderful teachers available to us.andy Leal will contact some for classes and rates. A lottery for classes was discussed in the event that more members wished to take a class than the teacher could accommodate. The general consensus was that members should be at the meeting to sign up for the classes they want. If a member does, however, sign up for a class, she (or he) is responsible for filling their spot should something come up to make it impossible for them to attend. The reasoning is that the cost is split among the no. of people taking the class, and drop-outs would incur unexpected expenses for the remainder of the students.

March is sign up for the doll show. Micki and Fran will check for deadline for submitting dolls. Fran has a list of workers for the quilt show. Everyone needs to make a minimum of 2 tooth fairy dolls to sell at our booth for $5.

Micki showed favors for the EDAC (Enchanged Doll Artist Convention) for Albuquerque in July 2010. The mouse on a base with a cheese moon was chosen. There will possibly be a workshop at Maurine's in the future.

Membership was again stated to be $20 for the year. Biobbye will send out a current roster.

Liz took the doll mascot home as it will no longer be displayed in the Boulder City Library.

After lunch, all members worked on a moon pin designed and presented by Linda Dufrene.

The Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers met for their December meeting at the Red Rock Casino buffet. A good time, and a lot of desserts, were had by all! As you can see by the photo below, we were all smiling!

Each of the members made pin dolls to share with one another. They all turned out beautifully, although all my photos didn't! I have included the photos that did, and beg forgiveness for the unlabelled ones and the non-existent ones!

The November official meeting will be held at Mary Ashcraft's home at 10:00 a.m. located at 230 West Sherwood in Henderson, NV. Bring your lunch, a drink, and a dessert to share! Teri Duffy has generously offered to be my assistant as I will have just had eye surgery on the Thursday before.

I have whimsical dolls from the following people:

To bring

1. Frame

If you choose to frame one of the above dolls, you will need some kind of wood, 10 x 12 picture frame. If you choose to frame something different, you will need to determine your own frame size. I would suggest working fairly small, not bigger than 18 x 20 or so, as we will have to work carefully to have counter working space.
2. stainless steel straight pins
3. Grrrip glue or something similar.
4. Needle and thread - to match whatever you will be sewing on. I will have a great deal to share, but if you require something special, bring it.
5. Masking tape
6. Utility knife tool and several sharp blades
7. Gen. sewing items - scissors, tape measure, etc.

I will have lots of mat boards in various colors, and if you find something you like, that's fine. You might wish to bring fabric, however, for your shadow box, or some of the beautiful craft papers that are out on the market. Or maybe you'll think of something even more wonderful like paverpohl or cardboard or upholstery fabric or.... I will also have foam core, and a cutting surface, as well as various paints, laces, etc. If you're thinking of doing another doll or 3-D item, don't get something too heavy. We will be building the "box" out of foam core and it won't be suitable for anything really heavy. Bring your own trinkets, photos, knick knacks, clay pieces, small flowered things, shells, or whatever you're considering and we'll find a way to arrange it. Last year Marion brought lace and several antique dolls. They made a beautiful arrangement in a shadow box. Sandy Leal brought lots of pieces she had made in previous classes, trinkets, beads, etc. Think like a scrapbook artist.

Saturday morning was our October Silver Doll-ers meeting, and we had an awesome turnout! Hooray for winter.

Maurine Adrezin announced that the class to be taught on March 6 thru March 8 2010 by Dorit is full. The following people have signed up for this - Maurine, Sandy, Dotty, Linda, Micki, Iris, Terri, Barbara, Mary, Di, Fran and Lyn. Bobbye Kee wishes to be on the substitute list if any of the above find themselves unable to attend.

Marilyn Huston will be here September 25 and 26 to teach her pop-up puppet at Maurine's home.

Diane Zammito announced that she is still working to schedule the Christi Friesen class on sculpting. More information will be forthcoming about this.

Bobbye gave the treasurer's report and says we have $1,215.56 in the treasury. As we decided to give $125 to Teens On the Street, we need a money raiser for the group. To this end, Micki is organizing the making of tooth fairy bags, and handed out the patterns, instructions and bags to all. Each member is asked to make at least two, and more if possible.

Bobbye Kee will be doing an informal meeting at her home on Nov. 7 to show us how to make her Countdown to Christmas Mouse from the Holiday Craft Magazine 2005, Designed by Soft in the Head. . Before that date, she promises to have a list of supplies we will be needing.

The next official meeting for the Silver Doll-ers will be at Mary Ashcraft's home,on Nov. 21 and will be the construction of a shadow box. More information will follow for supplies required.

Micki announced that the Christmas Luncheon (Dec. 5) will be $14.08 per person and will be at the Red Rock Casino unless M contacts us to advise they have decided to accommodate us. Stay posted.

As promised, I am including the doll critique/evaluation as composed by Fran and submitted to Ann Pugh for judging the dolls in the Desert Quilters Show March 19-21, 2010.

Grading: A is Excellent, B is Good, C is Fair

1. Expressive Impact: Strong visual impact. Shows good choice of chosen techniques.

2. Design Originality: Designed own unique form or creative use of commercial pattern.

3. Imagination: Unusual degree of imagination with regard to portraying human, plaything or cultural object.

4. Costuming: Appearance: neatness, sewing, good choice and use of fabric. Well designed and fits well. Good use of color.

Judging will be done by the regular quilt judges unless we wish to volunteer a judge or pay for one as there is no budget in the Desert Quilters of Nevada for that expense this year.

Everyone is encouraged to enter as many of their dolls as they can as we want to arouse lots of interest in our hobby/addiction, and new members as well.

This photo is of Mary Ashcraft's mermaid that she (I) beaded. This will be one of our projects in the coming months, and Di has ordered two styles of pre-stuffed silk forms to work on. One is the mermaid, and one we have labelled the "curvy lady". The club will pay $5 for each person, and the remaining $6 for the first doll is payable by the member. Additional dolls have been ordered by some members for $11.

Linda Dufrene brought us her witch that is a project from several years ago. The hands, feet and legs are clay, and the rest is fabric. Great job, Linda!

These leaf dolls will be a future class for Bobbye to present to us. Aren't they the cutest? They are called The Pride of Autumn, "Little Leaf People" and were made from a pattern by Janet Bodine.

Micki led us in making artist trading cards, and brought in lots of small stamped cards that could be used for trading, or as hang-tags for items we wish to sell. She brought us some bling, we brought some bling, and the results were, well, very bling-ey! see below!

Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. is our October doll meeting to be held at the Los Prados Country Club, and Micki has sent us the following list of supplies we'll need to bring for the artist trading cards:

Please bring small items, bling, ribbon, whatever you would like to glue onto the trading cards. I will bring a box full of small stuff to add to the cards, along with some pieces of material if you would like to glue that to the front of the card. I have stamped the backs of the cards so that you can fill in the info about yourself. I got the stamp a couple of years ago, and it is for the back of the ATCs. I have plenty of cards in various colors.

Bring also: glue, scissors, and a good imagination Hopefully we will all trade cards before we leave.

The September meeting of the Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers was held Saturday morning at Maurine Adrezin's home and studio. Members present were Lynn, Jeri, Barbara, Teri, Dotte, Maryann, Micki, Mary, Maurine, Iris, Sandy and her granddaughter Paris, Diane and Fran.

The first order of business was the DQN Quilt show to be held March 18-21. Fran reminded us that we'd be setting up on Thursday and tearing down on Sunday. She is in possession of a work roster, and I'm sure she'll be reminding us again of our obligations. Discussion was held regarding our desire to sell at the DQN show. It was decided that we would be able to sell both dolls and doll supplies. There will be a $10 fee per person for doing so in order to help recover some of the $275 cost for the booth. It was further decided that any cost not recovered was certainly more than worth the exposure and members attracted to our group by past events.

Fran will give Mary a list of guidelines drawn up in the past regarding doll entry categories and judging rules. Mary is to discuss the event with Karen Barth and Kathy Ferris to determine if we could have categories and a judge for our entries. A report will follow.

Discussion regarding membership was held, and the following benefits were noted. As members of Desert Quilters of Nevada, we qualify for a $10 coupon for one class yearly, a 10% discount shopping at JoAnn's, free publicity, and an opportunity to draw more members. Maurine questioned whether we would be able to do demonstrations at the quilt show and it was pointed out that we don't have room. Lynn informed us that she will obtaini more information regarding doing demos for Dooglebug. She also suggested Art in the Park, and the Boulder City Art Fair as possibles. Additionally she has access to libraries who might be looking for demos and she will locate the contact for each local library and put the closest member in touch with that library so we could inquire regarding demos and display cases.

Lynn told us that the display case with the dolls was a great hit and that all dollmaking books are checked out or on reserve. The library also does travelling displays that our group might want to be involved with.

Micki suggested that we make items to sell in the booth to enhance our bank account. She brought a tiny fairy attached to a small bag that we decided to make as a group project in January. Micki will re-design the pattern as necessary, locate the bags and any other important supplies, and we will bring our own "bags of bling" to embellish them.

The Christmas luncheon was discussed by Micki, and after telling us that M is not responsive to our demands for their location, we voted to go to Red Rock Casino again. The event will be Dec. 5, and names were drawn to exchange pin dolls. The pin dolls will be hand made (our best work), and no doubt beautiful!

The roster for next year's office was discussed and approved as follows:

Diane Zammito will be Pres., Mary Ashcraft will be Vice President, Lynn Schofield Dahl will publish the newsletter, Iris Puccini will be Secretary, Bobbye Kee will be treasurer, and the program chairmen will be Maurine Adrezin and Sandy Leal. Great team!

The November project has been changed from masks to artist trading cards. Micki says they feel the original mask plan was too complicated, and she feels more prepared to go ahead with the cards. We're all very excited!

Maurine showed us the doll pins made by Dorit, and announced the class that will be held March 6-8. She collected $25 from each of the members wishing to attend. The final cost will be approx. $100 per student, depending on what travel charges come to. The dolls are wonderful, and it's an exciting new technique we can't wait to learn.

Show and tell was enjoyed, lunch was consumed, and then Fran gave us a demo of making moulds from a product called alumilite. It can be purchased at http://www.alumilite.com/ at approx. $35 per package. Great fun, and great class.

The August meeting was held Saturday the 15th at the Boulder city Library. President Fran Parrigan Meehan announced that the table favors (preview photo below) as designed by Linda DuFrene, Sandy Leal and Diane Zammito, won first place at the Enchanted Doll Artists Convention in Albuquerque the end of July. We are all very proud of their efforts, and the members who also volunteered their time to complete the 10 required pieces. Some were used as favors, and some were auctioned off to put funds in EDAC's coffers, bringing up to $180. Congratulations to all!

The July meeting was held today at Bobbye Kee's home, and we had A BLAST!!! In attendance was Sandy Leal, Linda DuFrene and her grand daughter Mattie, Diane Zammitto, Barbara Sines and Mary Ashcraft. I don't know where the rest of you were, but you missed a really good time! Bobbye made her famous tuna salad, yummy bread, lemonade, iced tea, etc., and others brought lots of yummy stuff.

Bobbye had purchased a DVD titled Gourd Sculpting by Melynda Lotzen. You just wouldn't believe how she "cuts and pastes" the gourds to create the creatures she makes. We were all inspired. Everyone had something to show except Diane, who is saving herself for after Enchanted Doll Artists Conference in Albuquerque the end of this month. The photos are the beginnings of our various projects and I look forward to seeing lots of completed projects soon!

The meeting next month is in Boulder City at the library, where Lynn will teach us bead netting. Then we will go for lunch, and to spend, spend, spend at Goat Feathers. Hope to see all of you then! (Except for Jeri, who has too far to drive)

The July meeting will be held Saturday the 18th at Bobbye Kee's home. Bobbye would like everyone to be reminded that it's to be a potluck. We will be working on gourds that Bobbye cleaned, and below are her instructions.

It all has to do with your imagination and how you see the gourd as a doll. These are some of the things you need to make a doll;
a clean gourd
* a head that you have sculpted or a base for polymer clay face,
* paint to paint a face on the base (or to paint a polymer face)
* arms for people and/or legs for animals with a wire armature for attaching them
* pieces of fabric to make the costume or clothing - or you can just paint the gourd instead
(You could also papier mache on the gourd add lots of beads and this and that)

I do have a DVD on making gourds which are all painted, and it is a good way to get some ideas. The gourds I got are all sizes, but I just cleaned about 20 of the smaller sizes that we can work with. The price will be about $2.00 for the ones I cleaned. The bases of the gourds are about 5" with a long necks, and a few have round tops. A few cleaned canteen types make good purses. I do have lots of all sizes that need to be cleaned, so you can get more to take home to play with on your own.

For cleaning you need:
* a bucket to soak them in,
* bleach (10%) and water
* wet towel to put over and weight to keep them under for 30 min. or longer.
* copper choreboy
After scrubbing the skin with a copper chore boy (you may need a mask for they have mold spores on them). (the steel kind rusts). I used an old knife to scrub off the skin. Then rinse them in clean water and let dry. I have wire, and made 10- faces for small gourds that you can paint.

The June meeting of Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers was called to order by Fran Parrigan Meehan at the Los Prados community room, Saturday morning. It was noted that minutes are online at this blogspot, so no printed ones will be brought to the meeting.

Bobbye asked if we planned to support Teen Street again this year, and it was decided we would. Bobbye will write a check for $150 in December.

Diane told us that grip glue is now available at Dollmakers Journey. This is great news for those of us who love the way it works.

We will meet in June at Bobbye Kee's home, and work on gourds. The gourds will be for sale to each of us at cost, although a small donation for her cleaning time would be appreciated. She brought some samples of the projects she has completed in the past. The purse is just too cool, and the large doll was interesting as it had broken and she showed us all the "gunk" that is inside these gourds. Bobbye will send a list of the items to bring to the meeting, although she said that most of them would be very similar to what we are using for the bead lesson today.

In August the meeting will be at the Boulder City Library at 10:00 a.m. Lynn is making arrangements for our lunch, and then we will visit Goat Feathers as well. Lynn's presentation will be on bead lace, or netted beadwork. Sounds like a lot of fun. More details will be forthcoming.

Show and Tell included the beautiful EDAC table favors, which will be shown on this blogspot in August. We mustn't give away our secrets to other EDAC spies! Barbara Sines did a miniature dragon pin to go to EDAC as a pin doll, and also did several others pins out of novelty fabrics. Jeri Mills, our new member, brought a large collection of her Alfie Dolls made by Nancy Laverick patterns. She also showed us her ballerina chain. We look forward to seeing more of Jeri when she returns from NH.

Mary gave the lesson on making fiber beads. We also made some of paper, and experimented with dipping in paints, micro beads, wrapping with fuzzy yarn, etc., etc. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and many decided they would purchase the book fabulous fabric beads by kristal wick. ISBN 978-1-59668-077-7. It was purchased from Amazon, but I'm sure there are many locations it would be available.

May Meeting

The May meeting for the Silver Doll-ers was held at Micki's house and in her garage.

President Fran Parrigan Meehan announced that she has received notice from DQN (Desert Quilters of Nevada) that the annual quilt show will be held in October of 2010. The doll category has been included, so all members will want to think ahead to items they wish to enter.

The Enchanted Doll Artists Conference (hereafter referred to as EDAC) will be held in Albuquerque July 28 thru Aug 2 this year. At this point in time it will be attended by Fran, Sandy, Diane, Linda, Mary, Barbara and perhaps our new member Teri Duffy. All members involved in making portions of the table favors were encouraged (strongly!!) to finish their pieces so that Sandy, Diane and Linda can have them completed in plenty of time.

New member Teri Duffy was introduced to the group and shared that her interest include stained glass, cloth dolls, quilting, and teaching sewing to children.

The group shared show and tell, had pizza that Vinnie delivered for us and generally had a wonderful if sticky (it was paverpol, after all) time. Some beautifully completed dolls left Micki's garage to grace their owners' homes.

The meeting in July will be at Bobbye's house making gourds. Bobbye is asking if we would like to meet prior to the July 18th meeting to prep these gourds, or if we would like to use the 18th to do so, and then decorate them at a later date. The process is somewhat lengthy for preparation, so everyone needs to let Bobbye know.

The August meeting will be held at the Boulder City Library, hosted by Lynn, and will include a tour of Goat FEathers, and a wonderful lunch out.

In September we'll be back at Los Prados Coubhouse once again as we will in Oct.

The November meeting will be held at Mary Ashcraft's home. We will be framing our postcard dolls - now termed Whimsical felt cards, as designed by Micki. Everyone will need to be looking for an appropriate frame in the meantime. More information will follow.

The April meeting was held at Los Prados Clubhouse. New member, Iris Pucine attended, in addition to Marianne, Maurine, Lynn, Linda, Diane, Fran, Barbara, Sandy, Dottie, Mickiand Mary. The activity planned for the meeting was to complete Micki's Wacky Dolls, or to work on the table favors designed by Linda Dufrene, Diane Zammito and Sandy Leal for the EDAC meeting this July - Aug.

The meeting next month at Micki's house was discussed by Sandy Leal who will be demonstrating the use of paverpol on some wire frames she purchased. The cost will be $5 for each person involved for the form. Everyone is to bring a plastic drop cloth, fabrics to drape, a boar bristle brush (decoupage) that you won't mind sacrificing. Bring a covered container to put the paverpohl in (like a margarine tub or such).

Mary will send out a new roster of members soon.

For show and tell, Fran brought in a pin cushion that she has published in a 23-page spiral booklet which will soon be available. It will retail for $30 and include a mold. Really cute, Fran.

Fran brought in a finished troll with blue hair and its own blueberry bucket and pie. You'll want to study the picture closely.

Diane showed a table favor in its finished form so we'd all know what to expect. They are just fabulous.

Barbara Sines showed us her copper with enamel jewelry. Very beautiful. You're an inspiration to us all, Barbara!

Mary brought in a polymer clay bracelet.

A purse class was discussed, and more information will be forthcoming about this.

March 2009 meeting

The March meeting for the Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers was held at the Los Prados Country Club (5150 Los Prados Circle), as arranged by Barbara Sines. This is a great meeting place for the group as we have a large, well-lit room, a restaurant on-site, and the food is both very good and very reasonable. In attendance were Sandy Leal, Barbara Sines, Maryann Thompson, Dottie Millington, Micky Donch-Di Gangi, Lynn Schofield-Dahl, Diane Zammito, Linda DuFrene, Maurine Adrezin, Fran Parrington Mehan, Bobbye Kee and Mary Ashcraft.

It was announced that the Sun City doll club has "folded" and all of their members will now join Silver Doll-ers. The secretary (Mary Ashcraft) apologized to Micky for failing to send out the birthday card she deserved. However, it turned out that she received a card from another member, so the day was saved.

A roster will be sent to all members via e-mail. It was decided that no personal address information will be posted on this public site.

The meeting plans for the rest of the year were discussed and planned as follows:

April - finish birthday doll cards & work on EDAC favors. Diane gave out stands and we will work on those at home.
May - paverpohl demonstration by Sandy Leal in Micky's garaage.
June - Meet at Club house and finish up any party favors and birthday doll cards.
July - Meeting at Bobbye's house - gourds.
August - Meeting in Boulder City, 701 Adams Blvd., at the Boulder Citylibrary. Lynn Schofield-Dahl to give demonstration on netted bead lace. A field trip to Goatfeathers is also planned. Each member should bring the pin doll they received for Christmas sos that we can put together a display case in the library.
September - Meeting to be held at Clubhouse. Fran Meehan Parrigan to demo mould making.
October - Meeting to be held at the Clubhouse. Micky will be teaching masks. The fee is expected to be approx. $12 per person.
November - Meeting to be held at Mary Ashcraft's house. We will do a custom framing project.
December - Christmas party to be arranged at Red Rock Casino by Micky. Pin dolls will be exchanged. The club decided to pay for the lunch out of club fees.

Fran brought in two of her dolls and announced that classes will be up-coming. Watch her website for more information.

February meeting

Liz Thurman taught a class on hatmaking for February's meeting at Micki's house. From all reports, it was a great class. We'll all look forward to seeing some completed projects from the attendees.

Thanks to Barbara Sines, starting with our meeting on March 21 we have a new permanent meeting location at the Los Prados Country Clubhouse off Lone Mountain. The address is 5150 Los Prados Circle. When you arrive at the front gate, simply advise the guard that you will be attending the doll meeting at the clubhouse. Once inside the gate, turn left and you will see the clubhouse on the right. Go inside the clubhouse, walk to the right and the doll meeting room is the second room on the right.

The class for March 21 is being taught by Linda DuFrene, and will be the polymer clay troll doll. It is sooooo cute - even its little toes curl. You won't want to miss this fun class.

This Saturday morning our meeting was scheduled to be at Bobbye Kee's house. Due to a serious bug that we brought back from California, Bobbye will not be able to hostess this event. Stand by for more information!

The planned lesson is by Liz Thurman who will be teaching us how to make hats. The following is the supply list:
1 sheet 8" x 11 1/2" clear or frosted clear plastic or x-ray film
small roll of wire 20 or 22 gauge
wire cutters (not scissors)
sewing box with thread to match your fabric
trims - flowers, ribbons, feathers, buttons, etc.
Materials - lightweight poly silks, organza, lace, silks see-through nylon
to cover brimmed hat: cut a strip of fabric 21" long by 5 1/2" wide, plus two pieces of fabric about 5" square. For the crown, if material is see-through, use 2 pieces together. Cut the 4 1/4" circle out of 5" squares. If using poly-silk type fabric, use a single layer.

If you want to start your hat at home, that's ok. Trace and cut your brim and crown out of plastic. Please make your first hat out of plastic. You can buy the new plastic filing systems, accordion type. It's easy to separate the seams . Cut brim, mark start and stop on plastic. Put sewing machine on large, full stitch zig-zag. 12 to 14 needle is best. Place wire (straight) 20 or 22 gauge at start mark, zig zag wire to edge of plastic, let the fingers and brim bend the wire as you go. Overlap wire 1" from start to finish. Cut with wire cutters. Key - use same color thread as wire, light gray with silver. No bends, dips or speed bumps on wire - must be straight. Liz will bring a sewing machine and lots of needles.

Minutes for meeting January 17 held at Diane Zammitto's house
The following members were in attendance:
Bobbye kee, Micki Donch DiGangi, Maurine Adrezin, Mary Ashcraft, Sandy Leal, Diane Zammito, Linda Dufrene, Fran Parrigan, Lynn Schofield, Barbara Sines, Liz Thurman and Louise Cisco

Fran announced the change of one board member, Mary Ashcraft, who will try to take the place of the former secretary, Diane Zammito. Mary will be in charge of the new blogspot for Silver Doll-ers as it turned out to be unsuccessful to access the original blog set up by Fran from Mary's address. It was agreed that the name would be Silver Dollers.blogspot.com. (note from secretary - this name has changed, however, and that will be addressed following the minutes).

Lynn Schofield has access to a calendar site (Calsnet) that she will set up for the club. It will be linked to the blog so that members can now look at the blog rather than the old website.

Linda Dufrene announced that she hopes to be able to prepare a newsletter in February. This will also be posted on the blogspot.

The calendar was discussed and the following changes were made:
1. The March 28 informal meeting was supposed to be at Mary's house, but will not be possible due to a wedding in her family. The date was left open.
2. A trip to St. George has been proposed. Di will coordinate, and Mary will drive. Other drivers, or a rental van were discussed.

It was noted that rather than meet at our homes, A-1 sew and vac has a new room open available for meetings. The issue of stairs came up and it was decided that too many of us didn't like stairs. We like visiting homes better, have more freedom and time.

A letter was received from Street Teens thanking the Silver Doll-ers for their $150 donation last year.

The trip to Encinitas for a class from Barbara Chapman at Black Sheep for an Enchanted Fairy class on Feb. 6-7 was further discussed, and the following members are confirmed:
Barbara Keeling, Sandy Leal, Bobbye Kee, Mary Ashcraft, Linda Dufrene, Diane Zammito, and Micki Donch. One replacement would be nice for Fran since she has decided she's not making this trip. The group will stay at Days Inn and Sandy has made reservations. If there are any questions about the reservations, please call her.

The EDAC (Enchanted Doll Artist Conference) to be held in Albuquerque the end of July was discussed by Fran Parrigan. Our group will be making table favors - a fairy and sleeping dragon who are being designed by Di and Linda. We will need to make at least 10 favors, so the help of all will be greatly appreciated.

For show and tell, Fran showed her 3 dolls, Dancine, Flutter Rose and Nature's beauty. She will be holding classes for these 3 dolls at her studio. Dates will be forthcoming soon.

Barbara Sines brought in her witch made from Liz's pattern. Great job for a new dollmaker! The face was awesome, Barbara.

Lynn showed us some polymer clay faces she's been working on, as well as a dragon. I see a future project here!

Lynn again mentioned to everyone that she has an available show cabinet at the Boulder City Library. We really need to address filling this cabinet - our potential for new members is probably good here, and at no cost to us.

Maurine showed us her published article in Dol Crafter & Costume for March 2009. Congratulations, Maurine!
